The South Austin Museum of Popular Culture is pleased to announce a special exhibit of posters donated to the Museum in 2008 by Danny Roy Young.
An Austin cultural icon with Kingsville roots, Danny was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He owned the Texicalli Grille, was "Lord of the Board" with the Cornell Hurd Band, and was known to friends as "The Mayor of South Austin." Everyone who met Danny became a friend, and considered themselves a “best friend,” because that’s how he treated each of us...as if we were all very special to him. He supported and nurtured Austin’s folk, particularly us denizens of South Austin, like no one before him or since.
Opening Reception - May 2, 2009
Danny was a member of the founding board of the Museum. In 2007 he moved from the Board of Directors to the Advisory Board. In the summer of 2007 he came by the Museum with a large plastic tub of “stuff." That stuff turned out to be hundreds of handbills, posters, small cards and business cards that he’d collected over the years--everything from a 1967 Aquafest Beach Buggy Race handbill drawn by Jim Franklin to posters from his friend Curtis Clarke's Evangeline Café in 2007.
On August 20, 2008 as we spent the afternoon and evening sorting out the posters with the notion of an exhibit the sad, sad news came to us of Danny’s unexpected passing. That made the exhibit of the “Danny Young Poster Collection” a must and the exhibit will open on May 2nd with a reception and party starting at 7:09pm. We'll have live music, refreshments, and much fun enjoying the poster display while remembering dear Danny and the message on his door...
